Shifting Resolutions to Intentions
Today I rally on the last day of 2024 for a small end of year update. December has not been easy or kind! In fact, I’m hoping that this post even makes sense. I have COVID and can I just say “WOW WOW WOW!!!”. This is so terrible. I’ve never felt this bad or been this tired. Words slur and full sentences disappear. So I’ll keep this short.
I have some really exciting things I’m launching soon, so stay tuned! But for now, let’s talk about New Year’s pressure.
I really dislike all of the hype around New Year resolutions and “starting new” – but not for the reasons you might think. Last year I wrote about setting intentions for the year, instead of resolutions. Intentions have true purpose behind them and they tend to be tied to our values, making them more meaningful and desirable. So that’s the first thing, setting true intentions that will support the life you want for yourself and have a real foothold on making a difference. Let go of the superficial resolutions – better yet, ask yourself why these are really important to you because maybe there is some good shadow work to be done in the new year instead!
More so, I feel so much pressure to make the time for creating a list of intentions, time for reflection on the past year, time to create a vision for the new year. It’s an anxiety provoking countdown for me. I love the reflection part of this and it comes easily. But I feel a bit pigeonholed creating intentions for the entire year knowing that things change constantly. My real issue is that we only do this once a year. I want to do it in real-time and I want to be able to shift an intention to something that makes more sense to my life in 3 or 9 months.
This year, I am creating a handful of guideposts for the year that I have full intentions of bending and molding throughout the year. The core thread of the guidepost will be there but it may take on different forms throughout the year, and that’s pretty beautiful!
