Normalize Being Human!
I’ve been facilitating workshops and grounding exercises recently. It’s been extremely fulfilling and the feedback and response for these has been very positive. The audiences are people I work with, which might seem tricky but it’s been equally freeing for myself, and them, I believe. The workshops are all about self development and discovery – exploring beliefs, imposter syndrome, self compassion and care. When we show up for work, we sometimes put on our work mask. In these workshops, I’m teaching people about thoughts, beliefs, responses and patterns that can be mostly unconscious for them, so it ends up being very eye-opening. It also creates a space for folks to feel like they’re not alone in these areas. I’m normalizing human existence within a work environment, how neat! People are feeling less alone with struggles and more empowered to care for themselves throughout the workday.
What they’re doing for me is the same. I tend to feel a bit like an outcast in everyday life. I also tend to feel like maybe I’m missing something – some key piece of information that everyone else has. It can be an unsettling way to exist. As I approached my coaching business, and now these workshops, I come from the spaces and places I’ve been in my life. I’m sharing where I’ve been and what’s worked for me, in the moment and up to this very moment. Might it change tomorrow? Yes, and that’s OK. The passion and desire I have to help people comes from where I’ve been and where I am today.
Carl Jung said “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” I can understand this much clearer these days. For me, when we start to notice and question our beliefs we are in a position to uncover our unconscious responses and approach situations more consciously. More simply said, we’re able to show up differently in situations. We all have tendencies or things that set us off. Until we start uncovering what’s beneath these responses we’ll continue to have the same ones. More like reactions, and we’re unconsciously reacting, in many cases. When we’re conscious, we’re responding in our best frame of mind, which changes things greatly.
When we couple this with paying more attention to our bodies, and our individual alarm systems, we can uncover even more. For many of us, our bodies will set off alarms that seem out of place; even frustrating or annoying. If we can get curious as to what’s happening and when, we can start to connect some dots for ourselves and uncover a deeper understanding of ourselves – making even more of our unconscious conscious. It’s all a discovery process, and I do tend to nerd out on it! When we’re slowing down to notice our body and mind response we’re at a pivotal point for growth.
Growth, development, change – whatever you want to call it – can be uncomfortable, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming!
