The swirl of life
Life has been messy lately. Not bad messy. I’m grateful for my family, friends, overall health and job. But, sometimes we need to call it what it is. Being grateful is important but gratitude can’t be the answer to all challenges. Sometimes we’re in the grind of life and we need to acknowledge that, too.
It’s been really grind-y over here. I forgot about picture day the other week, didn’t get snacks for daycare, can’t find time for homework and the quinoa I was going to pack for my daughter’s lunch had already gone bad. So, no, not life threatening bad. But, lots of little things. Enter the swirl of life. Life can give us one big challenge or it can give us a bunch of things to juggle at once. While I’m in the tornado of everything it feels overwhelming, like I can’t come up for air because everything will get lost or slip through the cracks.
Here is a pivotal moment in the daily grind. A reminder that when I feel the swirl in my body that I need to interrupt it with a two key things:
Non-negotiables. Am I creating time and space for my self care on a daily basis? Within the swirl, we believe that there is no time for these. However, within the foundation of our values we’ve laid the groundwork to know this is a lie. More importantly, it’s do or die.
Compassion. First, for myself and how much I’m trying to manage. Second, for others who are likely in a similar spot doing the best they can. It’s not an us vs them – we’re all contributing to humanity. Kindness and compassion breed kindness and compassion. Let’s be the impetus for that!
I don’t want to negate that in some instances we need to pull up even further and evaluate if this swirl we’re in is temporary. If it doesn’t seem temporary then we have some bigger questions to think about. Is it sustainable? Does it meet my truth and my values? Can I change anything to improve my quality of life? If it’s all “no” for answers then we need to evaluate a different route for ourselves.
Understanding how we’re feeling and why is the starting point to determining our next steps. This is our life to live so why not make it manageable and, dare I say, fabulous!
